The Blue Shield

The Blue Shield is an international NGO established under Dutch Law made-up of an international Board and national committees. It is committed to the protection of the world’s cultural property, and is concerned with the protection of cultural and natural heritage, tangible and intangible, in the event of armed conflict, natural- or human-made disaster. It is an advisory body to UNESCO’s Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
The international Board is supported by a small Secretariat currently funded through the UNESCO Chair in Cultural property Protection and Peace at Newcastle University, UK. All elements of the Blue Shield work with the military and other uniformed services (police, customs, emergency services etc.), and the heritage and humanitarian sectors, to mitigate the impact of armed conflict and natural/human-made disasters on the heritage.
