NECSTouR is the Network of European Regions for Competitive and Sustainable Tourism. It brings together around 38 regions of Europe with a strong competency in tourism, as well as tourism-related academic organisations such as universities and research institutes, and representatives of sustainable and responsible tourism business associations and networks from around 20 Member States. Since 2007 NECSTouR has been at the forefront of European tourism policy, lobbying to strengthen the presence of regional destinations in the European arena.

The NECSTouR Working Group on Cultural Tourism and Sustainability coordinated the NECSTouR Contribution to the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. This was one of the top priorities for NECSTouR in 2018. It enabled us to make synergies with different working groups as cultural tourism, indicators, innovation and skills, as well as digital platforms. Tourism can be an excellent strategy to foster Social Cohesion in Europe through making alive and revalorising our Cultural Heritage, reinforcing the sense of belonging while fostering economic growth and job development. However, we are facing a moment of challenges in the European tourism Destinations: overtourism, saturated areas vs less saturated areas, authenticity vs massification, tourists vs citizens/landscape; revalorisation vs over folklorisation of Cultural Heritage, and much more.
